The existence of Burangkeng landfilling site in the area has triggered the possibility of groundwater pollution due to leachate infiltration, especially by pathogenic bacteria. Coliform are found to be indicators in detecting bacterial contamination in groundwater by inflicting waterborne diseases meanwhile Salmonella is bacteria that pathogenic to humans. In order to explore any groundwater pollution caused by leachate, a series of bacterial analysis methods are done to the groundwater and leachate samples. Most Probable Number (MPN) method was used to determine the total coliform, while the Total Plate Count method along with Salmonella-Shigella agar media was used to measure the number of Salmonella. Identification of other genus of bacteria was conducted to see the dominant bacterial populations in the leachate and groundwater samples. Groundwater samples were taken in 18 spots at Burangkeng and Sumur Batu Village. Groundwater and leachate samples were taken in two seasons, which are rainy and dry season, to further see any impacts to the groundwater and leachate quality from rainwater infiltration. This study showed that leachate was not the main source of the groundwater contamination, but the inadequate sanitary facilities seemed to be related with groundwater contamination as well as the most dominant bacteria in groundwater and leachate are Micrococcus and Bacillus. text |
