Summary: | Burangkeng landfill site occupied by up to 4,107 m3/day domestic waste from Bekasi
District has been operating by implementing the open dumping landfill system since
1995. The landfill site located within less than 100 meters from the settlement using
groundwater as their clean water source, potentially increases the ground water
pollution caused by landfill leachate that threatens the people living around the
landfill site. This study performed the groundwater quality analysis for the parameter
of TDS, pH, temperature, DO, nitrogen, sulfate, total phosphate, chloride, COD, as
well as Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, and Cr metals. Groundwater samples were taken from 18
pumped wells with the depth of 8 to 20 meters below the surface on the radius up to
1,000 meters from the landfill site. The wells located within the radius of ±50 meters
from the landfill had been contaminated. However, the contaminated area could be
farther in the rainy season. Besides, the lightly polluted ground water on the study
area, of which the ground water Pollution Index value would increase up to radius
±250 meters from the landfill in the rainy season caused by landfill leachate
infiltration. The sanitation condition and the presence of animal shed were highly
contributing to the ground water Pollution Index in several wells. |
