Description
Summary:Earthquakes may result in loss of lives and damage on properties and infrastructures. Therefore, seismic hazard and seismic risk need to be determined. In this thesis, the average recurrence interval of earthquakes with certain moment magnitudes of earthquake source of Megathrust Mid 2 Sumatera are determined using the probability distribution of moment magnitude which is a Genearalized Pareto distribution. The average recurrence interval is used to determine the seismic risk using a Poisson distribution. The study in this thesis is carried out using simulation. The seismic hazard, such as Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA), experienced in Padang, Mentawai Islands and the sur- rounding areas, for certain distances from the (epi)center of the earthquake, is determined using two attenuation equations. The PGA distribution is modeled using a probability distribution which is skewed-to-the-right and has positive values. Another seismic hazard, namely the Modied Mercalli Intensity (MMI), experienced in Padang, Mentawai Islands and the surrounding areas, for certain distances from the (epi)center of the earthquake, is also determined. Using an empirical relationship between MMI and PGA, the mean value of the MMI is calculated.
