Description
Summary:Karangharjo area is located in Kalibaru Region, Banyuwangi Regency, East Java Province, which is known as the boundary of Southern Mountains Zone of East Java and Quartenery Volcanoes Zone. To comprehend and understand about geological characteristic of karangharjo area, a study and geological mapping was conducted in the area of ± 57 km2 which is located at 8o15’26,59” S – 8o20’29,80” S and 107o59’59,82” E – 108o03’29,81” E. The method of research are including mapping activity and data collecting in the field and also laboratory analysis to support data interpretation. Geomorphology of studied area is in early to mature geomorphic stage and it was interpreted as the result of exogenous process since Pliocene – Pleistocene deformation. Apart from exogenous process, morphology of research area was controlled by geological structure and diversity of lithologic properties to form alignment of valleys and rivers. Stratigraphy of research area consist Pyroclastic Flow Breccia Unit of Merubetiri Volcano as the oldest unit which was formed by the eruption of Oligocene – Early Miocene Merubetiri Volcano. Andesit Lava Flow Unit of Merubetiri Volcano was lying conformable above Pyroclastic Flow Breccia Unit of Merubetiri Volcano. And then Lahar Breccia Unit lying unconformable above Pyroclastic Flow Breccia and Andesit Lava Unit of Merubetiri Volcano. In series Pyroclastic Flow Breccia Unit of Raung Volcano 1 and Pyroclastic Flow Breccia Unit of Raung Volcano 2 were lying conformable above Lahar Breccia Unit of Raung Volcano as the result of Quartenary Volcano activity. Geological characteristic of karangharjo area closely related with the deformation of research area. Geological structure of research area was formed by the activity of Java Subduction, which formed lineament and strike slip fault with NE-SW and NW – SE trend in Southern Mountains Zone of East Java.
