This phenomenon caused the Station Malang Kotabaru can not be able to accommodate all of the rail services users at once. PT KAI, together with the Directorate General of Railways and Malang City Government, plans to develop Malang Kotabaru Station in order to accommodate the tourists and users of regular train services. The main issues in this project are cultural heritage areas, urban places, circulation, and zoning. The development project consists of the addition of new station buildings, new functions, and adaptation of the function of the old station building. The new functions are transit hotel, retail, foodcourt, plaza, and park that can facilitate 43.000 passengers per day. The main concept of this project is “The Gate of Tourism”, which aims to make Malang Station Kotabaru as the gate of tourism area in Malang and its surroundings. The cultural heritage building is maintained and adapted to meet the functional requirements and regulations. The new building uses a contextual juxtaposition approach, which mean that the new building is made in contrast to the old building so that the old building will look prominent. The new station building has two entrances, each is in west and east. West Gate is in the old building and it serves the departure and arrival of the local train. East Gate is in the new building and it serves the departure and arrival of the long-distance train. Both doors are connected with a skybridge that serves as a paid concourse and pedestrian bridge. text
