Description
Summary:?-Butyrolactone is an ester cyclic with four carbon atoms. ?-Butyrolactone is used as starting materials in paint and coating industries. Total consumption of ?-butyrolactone in the world is about 385 million kg per year. This research aims to synthesize ?-butyrolactone through cyclocarbonylation of 2-propenol, a glicerol derivative, using [Co2(CO)8], [Co2(CO)6(P(Ph)3)2], or [Co2(CO)6(P(OPh)3)2] as a pre-catalyst either in one-pot reaction method or in isolated active catalyst method. Mixing reactant, pre-catalyst, CO, and H2 gas into a high pressure reactor is classified as a one-pot method. Isolated active catalysts HCo(CO)3L were generated by hydrogenation of pre-catalyst (Co2(CO)6L2). Isolation of HCo(CO)3L was required to prevent either hydrogenation or hydroformylation reaction. Final product of ?-butyrolactone was obtained through one-pot reaction method with 160 ?C temperature and 56 bar CO/H2 synthetic gas pressure for 8 hours using 5mol% pre-catalyst. Formation of ?-butyrolactone was observed from vibration of carbonyl ester cyclic at wavenumber of 1769 cm-1. Isolated hydrido-cobalt [Hco(CO)4] catalyst from hydrogenation of [Co2(CO)8] in 2-propenol was not succesfull. Such a process showed the formation of anionic cobalt complex of [C3H5OH2]+[Co(CO)4]- (v COterminal = 1904 cm-1).
