Nitzschia closterium, one of more microalgae diatom, is potential to be an alternative biopigment source. The purpose of this study are to purify and identify biopigment from marine microalgae N.closterium. The biopigments were extracted from N.closterium cell growns in the walne medium by using acetone p.a as a solvent, then separated and purified by thin layer chromatography (TLC) and column chromatography. The biopigments were characterized by the visible spectrophotometry, infrared spectrophotometry, and 2D TLC . The result showed that the average biomass density of N.closterium for 6 days was 1.67 g / L. Nine main visible biopigments were identified by TLC. Five types of biopigment were identified after purification : ?-carotene (426, 452,and 478nm), pheophytine a (410, 503, 608, and 666 nm), chlorophyll a (410, 430, 616, and 662 nm), lutein (424, 447, and 475 nm), and fucoxanthine (423, 446 and 468 nm) which several functional group of these biopigments were confirmed by using infrared spectrophotometry. Furthermore, the purity test of these biopigments by using 2D TLC suggested that the pure biopigment was only fucoxanthine. text
