Description
Summary:Synthesis of polyglycolic acid (PGA) from trioxane using trifluorosulfonic acid (TfOH) as a catalyst has been reported under high temperature and high presure (T = 170 °C; PCO = 57 bar). Characteristic of such a conventional acid catalyst is corrosive to the reactor. In this research,we propose a metal catalyst for synthesis of PGA which is not corrosive. Two cobalt based catalyst, Co2CO8/piridin (1) and [Zr(dibenzyldiketonoat)3][Co(CO)4] (2), were employed in the reaction. Complex 2 was prepared from the disproportionation of Co2(CO)8 in dry tetrahydrofuran (THF), followed by the addition of [Zr(dibenzyldiketonate)3]Cl. The FTIR spectrum of complex2 showed a vibration of CO terminal at 1890 cm?1, which explained the presence of anion cobalt complex.Vibration of CO ester at 1760 cm?1 waspresent in the copolymerization of trioxane/CO product using catalyst 1, at 170 oC and 40 bar of CO.The same reaction condition employing catalyst 2 showed no formation of PGA.
