CARBONYLATIVE POLYMERIZATION OF 2-PROPENOL USING IN-SITU PREPARED HCO(CO)4

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are a class of biodegradable polyesters. An example of PHAs is poly-4-hydroxybutyrate (P4HB), polymer known as difficult to synthesize chemically. Here we reported a new synthetic route of poly-4-hydroxybutyrate (P4HB), by a one-pot carbonylative polyme...

An example of PHAs is poly-4-hydroxybutyrate (P4HB), polymer known as difficult to synthesize chemically. Here we reported a new synthetic route of poly-4-hydroxybutyrate (P4HB), by a one-pot carbonylative polymerization 2-propenol – a glycerol derivative – using Co2(CO)8 as a catalyst precursor. Another product derived from this carbonylation is ?-butyrolactone (GBL). P4HB and GBL were generated when the reaction was carried out at 160 ?C, for 18 h, using 1 mol% of the catalyst, in the presence of 18 bar of CO and 4 bar of H2. 1H NMR analysis of the crude product showed 15% formation of P4HB and 25% formation of ?- butyrolactone. Catalytic activity of the purified P4HB was 10 g per mol catalyst per hour (g.mol-1.h-1). Molecular weight of the purified product was less than 1200 Dalton which showed the formation of oligomeric P4HB. Although the activity and molecular weight are relatively low, such a procedure describes an alternative synthetic strategy for P4HB with low CO pressure. text
