With the concept of two-way communication between utilities, smart meters and customers, Advance Metering Infrastructure (AMI) as the latest generation of metering infrastructure will provide many benefits for for the development of water meter infrastructure. In its implementation, there are several factors that must be considered so that AMI can be applied to millions of water utility customers, i.e. hardware and installation cost, service equipment power consumption, connectivity between every individual customer and the utility, and electricity resources. In this study, a sensor node will be designed to be implemented on an AMI-based water meter infrastructure system that has these four characteristics: applicable to installed mechanical water meters, low-powered, has long-range connectivity with low power consumption, and has independent power source that can supply electricity continuously. In this research, performance tests of the five main components of sensor node which are developed to fulfil the desired criteria will also take place. The results show that the designed sensor node has been successfully operated according to the desired characteristics. However, the power supply system designed in this study has not been able to supply electrical energy continuously, especially during cloudy weather conditions. text |
