STUDY OF SEPARATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF CLOVE LEAF OIL BY WATER AND STEAM DISTILLATION USING PILOT SCALE DESIGNED GLASS EQUIPMENT
Clove leaf oil is traditionally produced in Indonesia by steam distillation from fallen clove leaves. The distillation of clove leaf oil by farmers is still using traditional equipment made by metal material that contribute to a low quality of clove leaf oil. This clove leaf oil is usually contamina...

The distillation of clove leaf oil by farmers is still using traditional equipment made by metal material that contribute to a low quality of clove leaf oil. This clove leaf oil is usually contaminated and has brownish black in color. The objetive of this research is to separate and to characterize clove leaf oil obtained by water and steam distillation using designed pilot scale glass equipment. Sample of clove leaf, Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merril & Perry, that are used contain water and ash content 37,83% and 4,77% respectively. This clove leaf oil obtained by water and steam distillation using designed pilot scale glass equipment is clear light yellow to colorless in color with 1,045 g/mL density, 1,530 refractive index and solubility in 70% ethanol with ratio 1 : 2. The Infrared spectra showed that there are functional groups on eugenol which is main content of clove leaf oil. The clove leaf oil is also meet the quality requirements on SNI 06-2387-2006 – Minyak daun cengkih. text |
