In the anaerobic process, the formation of ethanol becomes important because it can be used as an energy source. The existence of N2 gas in anaerobic process also has the potential to increase the production of ethanol which then can lead to altering H2 partial pressure and alter the pathway into forming more ethanol or acetic acid. The addition of iron could potentially improve the performance of anaerobic microorganisms and ethanol production where it can increase the effect of forming alcohol by influencing the alcohol dehydrogenase enzyme. Therefore, this study aims to measure the production of ethanol which can be produced from the anaerobic process, especially in the formation of ethanol in acidogenesis phase and determine the optimum time of flushing N2 and addition of iron for the best ethanol production by using artificial waste and utilizing temperature around 25oC. In this research, the treatment uses a Circulating Bed Reactor (CBR) and treated with N2 flushing variation of 12, 24, 36, and 48 hours. The process last for 72 hours. The optimum N2 flushing variation is for a flushing time of 24 hours which resulted in COD removal efficiency reaching 56% and the formation of ethanol reaching as much as 84.7%. The variation of added iron was used with a concentration of 5, 10, 20 and 40 mg/L. While the optimum addition of iron was obtained by an added concentration of 10 mg/L with COD removal efficiency of 64% and amounted to 95.4% ethanol formation. text
