Description
Summary:Sedimentary rock or specifically sandstone is a physical system with a high level of complexity. Studies about rocks or other kind of porous medium could be accomplished numerically because of all the advancements and developments of computer and imaging technology. The basic idea of numerical analysis in the study of rock characteristics is by implementation of image analysis and processing. The image could be obtained by CT scan or computer modelling. Rock modelling is developed to obtain physical quantities without using conventional methods on real samples. There are many microstructure modelling schemes such as simulated annealing, process-based modelling, and continuum geometrical technique. One of the most important characteristics in model generation is how to simulate compaction as one of the main processes in sedimentary rock formation. This process is implemented in random deposition of spherical grain that can create models with interpenetrated (non-penetrable) grains as a result of compaction. The level of compaction or penetration is translated as overlap degree which is a quantitative value, so it may be implemented to random deposition technique in creating microstructure of sandstones. Models with a higher level of overlap could reach lower values of porosity. Models with different overlap degree is generated with equal values of target porosity. The curve shows that the model’s complexity trend is negative. Further study is done by generating cross-plot of specific surface area and porosity as a potential reference in the process of generating rock models which possess similar characteristics with real sandstone sample.
