Groundwater sometimes has a high concentration of iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn). One of the treatment for iron and manganese removal is by cascade aerator. Water dropped by gravity passing trough each step in order to create thin liquid film and air-water contact, resulting in oxidation process of dissolved iron and manganese into suspended. This study was conducted with artificial water as preliminary study and then use groundwater. The objectives of this study are to determine the optimum conditions of cascade aerator and to know the effect of flowrate, pH, dissolved iron concentration, and detention time in removing dissolved iron and manganese. The optimum condition seen from the highest removal efficiency of dissolved iron and manganese. Flow rate variation were conducted in 2 lpm,4 lpm, and 6 lpm. While, the variation of pH were 5, 7, 9, and the variation of dissolved iron concentration were at 2 mg/l, 4 mg/l, and 6 mgl. The optimum flow rate was at 2 lpm (0,0021 m3/minute/m2) with removal efficiency of dissolved iron 30-40% and dissolved manganese 6-11.4%. Removal efficiency of dissolved iron and manganese increased at pH 9 with dissolved iron removal 46-52% and manganese 26-34%. The variation of dissolved iron manganese at 2 mg/l, 4 mg/l, and 6 mg/l has the dissolved iron removal efficiency 27-30%, 30-40%, and 33-43%, which the higher of dissolved iron concentration, the higher of its removal efficiency. The lowest dissolved manganese removal occurs at the highest dissolved iron concentration. The results show that detention time can increases removal efficiency of dissolved iron and manganese. Dissolved iron removal efficiency in groundwater was 20-30% and dissolved manganese was 3.7-7.2 %. Removal of dissolved iron and manganese in groundwater increased by pH adjustment to 8 with iron removal 26-32% and manganese 17.5-22%. text
