Summary: | Nowadays, plastics usages are of much concerned since they are difficult to degrade. Several methods have been implemented to reduce plastics usage and recycle them, one of which was modifying plastics as materials for substituting asphalt. Several studies showed that the addition of plastics, including PP, PE, and PS could increase the quality of asphalt mixture. In this study, PP plastics waste with various concentrations of 0.5%, 0.8%, and 1% were investigated to substitute asphalt mass. The mixing of plastics and asphalt was conducted by wet method, which was adding PP plastic into asphalt when being heated so it produced a homogeneous mixture. Then, AC-WC mixture was made with asphalt content 5%, 5.5%, 6%, 6.5%, and 7%. Five parameters of mixtures tested by Marshall Method. Asphalt contents which met all the parameters were plotted in bar chart to determine Optimum Bitumen Content (OBC). The obtained results suggested that there were changes in properties of rheological properties after the addition of PP plastics which was indicated by the increasing of viscosity, softening point, flash point, and the decreasing of density, penetration and solubility. On the other hand, based on Marshall test, OBC for asphalt pen 60/70 was 5.4% while the OBC with PP plastic content of 0.5%, 0.8% and 1%, respectively, were 5.41%, 5.43% and 5.45%. In spite of the increasing value of OBC, asphalt with PP 0.5% used less amounts of asphalt than other concentrations. It can be seen from technical and environmental aspect that plastic content of 1% was optimum content because it gave high increasing of stability and Remaining Strength Index (RSI), and reduce plastic waste much more than others content. If it was seen from economical aspect and energy usage, plastic content of 0.5% was optimum content because it reduced higher asphalt cost and less energy usage. However, the process needed much more energy and increased gas emission such as CO, NOx, and SO2. |
