The system consisted of a modified septic tank followed by an upflow anaerobic biofilter, both accommodated within a single unit. This reactor will treat the domesic blackwater that came from Computer Laboratory if ITB Jatinangor which produce 75 liter per day of the blackwater. The Modified septic tank with biofilter media has 1.5 m3 of the volume and consist of two compartments that connected by an upflow stream, they are Zone I as the settling tank and Zone II as the biofilter. Anaerobic biofilter that used in this study is a system that combines the suspended and attached growth through the pipe plastics media with length about 10 cm each. The reactor has operated for 21 weeks in the start up phase and shows comparatively good enough removal efficiency than the CST for COD, BOD, TSS, Ammonia, and Total Phosphate as 45, 58, 43, 22, and 83% respectively, which ranged between 0 and 45% for CST for all the parameters. Eventhough the removal rate of the ractor yet unstable (less than 85%) and below the standard of Governor’s Act Number 122 Year 2005 about the wastewater quality standard, this system can be a promising alternative to increase the sanitation quality through domestic wastewater treatment of blackwater, particularly in the rural areas of the developing countries. text
