Description
Summary:Karst region have unique characteristic. It mainly composed by carbonate rocks. Some of karst region in Indonesia placed in Java. Most of Indonesia's population live on the island of Java, causing a high population density, that threat the sustainability of karst and its water resources. The high content of calcium and bicarbonate are major ion that found in karst groundwater region. Pollution and over utilization of fresh water has decrease the availability of clean water supply and will increases the water deficit. The high content of calcium and bicarbonate in karst groundwater causing limited usage due to its quality. Karst groundwater treatment using the ion exchanger is expected to remove Ca+ and HCO3 - and also other dominant ions such as Mg+ and Cl- thus improving the usability of the water. Ion exchange is reversible process between ion in solution and ion exchange material. Groundwater pumped into ion exchange column, that consist of cation and anion exchanger. Effluent from this column is analyzed with Ca+, Mg+ , HCO3 - dan Cl- contents. The adsorption of these ions will be affected by such different operational conditions and also its selectivity. Observed operating conditions including height of ion exchanger media and pH of the water to be treated. Strong Acid Cation Exchanger and Strong Base Anion Exchanger is an ion exchanger media are generally widely used both for water treatment or industrial needs. Ion exchanger will adsorb ions in accordance with selectivity until saturated. Highest adsorption capacity found in cation Ca2+. Saturated ion exchanger is regenerated to recover its ability to adsorp again.
