Summary: | Utilization of Styrofoam waste has become interesting idea to recycle waste into energy source and to reduce pollutant. Polystyrene is basic material of styrofoam waste which is diffuclt to decompose by microorganism in nature. The use of sulfonated polystyrene as a membrane for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) were investigated in this research to substitute Nafion which is commercially used for polymer electrolyte in fuel cell. Isolated polystyrene from styrofoam hence was sulfonated by acetyl sulphate as sulfonating agent to yield sulfonated polystyrene which is subsequently modified by reaction with divinylbenzene as crosslink agent. One percent divinylbenzene were reacted with sulfonated polystyrene in order to create crosslink and then blended with lignosulfonate to increase sulfonate groups in polyblend thus increase the mechanical properties. Polyblend were prepared from sulfonated polystyrene-divinylbenzene with lignosulfonate different concentration of 2,5%, 5%, 7,5% and 10%. Polyblends having lignosulfonate concentration of 7,5% has the highest conductivity and ion exchange capacity. The conductivity and ion exchange capacity of membrane were 9,94.10-4 S/cm and 0,54 meq/gram respectively |
