To fulfill the need of water, humans develop the technology to treat water from various sources so it will be safe to consumed and used in daily activities. Water treatment has three objectives, to improve the aesthetics of the water in order to be accepted by consumers, to eliminate toxic compounds and eliminate or inactivate pathogenic organisms in the water. One form of water treatment that can be used so the water is safe and suitable for human consumption is chlorination. Chlorination is the process of affixing chlorine compounds into the water that need to be processed. Chlorine compounds have the ability to remove bacteria. It also act as an oxidizer that can oxidize both organic and inorganic substances. Chlorine compounds are used for the chlorination process are available in the form of solid, liquid and gas. This study will compare the effectiveness of four types of chlorine compounds with 3 chlorine dose variation. Chlorine compounds used in the study are calcium hypochlorite [Ca(OCl)2], Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), Trichloroisocyanuric Acid (TCCA) and Chlorine dioxide (ClO2). The parameters used for comparison are the removal efficiency of turbidity, organic matter and bacteria; dosage and cost needed; and the doses of Breakpoint Chlorination on each chlorine compounds. The water sample used in this study was taken from three different sources, namely the intake of Perusahaan Daerah Air Minum (PDAM), a river in Dago Pojok and a well in Dago Pojok. The result showed that ClO2 give the best results with 97% of turbidity removal efficiency, 86% of organic matter and 100% of bacterial removal after being after being used with detention time of 30 minutes. The advantages of using ClO2 in water treatment process is the produced residual chlorine that tend to be stable than the safe standard for residual chlorine on water which is 0.2 to 0.5 mg / l text |
