One of the illegal mining locations are in Ciherang, Kutawaringin village, Kutawaringin district, Bandung regency. Illegal mining activities typically using amalgamation technique, such as by mixing the ore with mercury in water. In the washing process, the waste still contains mercury discharged into water bodies, so it is possible to cause pollution to the environment. Heavy metals can not be degraded biologically, and will have accumulated in the river. Mercury is known as a highly toxic metal in the environment and cause biomagnification in mammals, fish, birds, and humans throughout the food chain. Sediment is the main repository in the aquatic environment, with approximately 80% of the mercury in the aquatic systems that move in the sediment. Therefore, research is needed to knowing concentration of mercury in water and sediment around the PETI. Sampling was carried out at 6 points, which are 3 points around the outlet eflluent gold tailings, 1 point upstream before contaminated with mercury, 1 point of diluted canal and 1 point after mixing. Mercury concentrations were analyzed by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). The results of this study showed that the concentration of mercury in the sediment at the point 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 are exceeded the quality standard, which increased from point 3 to point 4 is 12 times and decrease concentration at point 6 until 12 times, while the concentration of mercury in water is exceeded at point 4, which increase is 15 times. There was an increase concentration from point 3 to point 4 because number of gold processing at point 4 is higher, while decrease concentration at point 6 because diluted by Cigondok irigation. showed that the text |
