SPECTROPHOTOMETRY OF EUGENOL AND CARYOPHYLLENE IN METHANOL AND ETHANOL

Clove oil obtained from steam distillation of clove leaf. The dominant components of clove oil are eugenol and caryophyllene with the composition of 70% and 20% respectively. Eugenol purification from clove oil produces large quantity of sodium sulphate. Alternative waste processing is neede...

The dominant components of clove oil are eugenol and caryophyllene with the composition of 70% and 20% respectively. Eugenol purification from clove oil produces large quantity of sodium sulphate. Alternative waste processing is needed or other purification methods should be established. Alternatively, extraction process to separate eugenol and caryophyllene could also be applied. Previously, caryophyllene was extracted with methanol and kerosene. The concentration of caryophyllene in methanol was determined by HPLC method using UV detector. In this research, the mixture of eugenol and caryophyllene in methanol and ethanol was determined by UV spectrophotometry. By observing the spectrum of each component, it is known that the wavelength that used in analysis are 281.8 nm (maximum wavelength of eugenol) and 205 nm (maximum wavelength caryophyllene). At its maximum wavelength, eugenol and caryophyllene have a linear standard curve. Absorbance of the mixture was higher, it is predicted that there is a change of eugenol and caryophyllene in the mixture. text
