Summary: | Syngas is a mixture of gas mostly CO and H2 which is obtained through steam reforming natural gas, gasification of coal or biomass. In natural gas, besides shortchain hydrocarbons, there are also impurities commonly found. One of them is the variety of sulfur gas substances. Sulfur gas compounds are toxic compounds that appear widely in input gases for industries such as gasification of coal, natural gas, and liquified petroleum gases (LPG). The presence of these compounds, even in just a few ppm, can lead to corrosion of equipment and piping, poison the catalyst, and lead to economic losses on a large scale. The process of adsorption of H2S and other sulfur compounds from various gases uses iron adsorbents is one of the oldest processes that has been found.
The main experimental work procedure in this study is divided into three main parts, namely the preparation stage, the adsorption stage, and the H2S concentration analysis stage. The preparation stage consists of the process of making the adsorbent, and the characterization of the adsorbent. H2S gas absorption will be carried out by flowing a mixture of H2S and N2 gases by opening all valves where the concentration of H2S is 100 ppm. The gas mixture that has flowed will then be contacted with the adsorbent that has been put into the adsorption column. The analysis used included the breakthrough curve from the results of gas chromatography analysis.
From the results of the experiment, it was found that from the three tested adsorbents (pimit, sulfatreat, and Clariant), the best performance was pimit. This can be seen from the absorption capacity where the pimite has an absorption capacity of 0.3438 grams of H2S / gram adsorbent. The pimit adsorbent test itself will be well done with the condition of the inlet concentration of 50 ppm, bed mass of 1 gram, flow rate of 2.82 cm / s and particle size of the pimit adsorbent which is 50-60 mesh.
