Summary:Modification of Bangka Island’s sand has been carried out via impregnation technique using polyvinyl acetate of wood glue as modifier. The aim of modification is to obtain the material for soil structure stabilizer, to prevent the errosion. Bangka Island’s sand was characterized to determine the physical and chemical properties. The investigation showed that the Bangka’s sand include in quartz groups with SiO2 as the major component. The density of the Bangka Island’s sand is 2.8712 g/cm3. Quartz has good thermal resistance that is stable at high temperatures. Modification by polyvinyl acetate give the best result with 14% (w/w) of wood glue concentration and at the weight ratio of sand and modifier is 1: 5 in composition. The result of characterization indicate that the modification has been successfully made, based on the spectrum of Difusse Reflectance Spectofotometry (DRS) before and after modification. Suitability of polyvinyl acetate-coated sand as soil structure stabilizer seen from it’s physical and chemical properties, such as the density of material and it’s ionic exchange capasity. The density of polyvinyl acetate-coated sand decrease from 2.7832 to 2.4981 g/cm3. The coated sand has ionic exchange capacity for Ni(II) 0.0000 - 239.8752 mek/g and for Zn(II) 0.0000 - 279.0039 mek/g. The suitability of polyvinyl acetate-coated sand as soil structure stabilizer also seen from it’s chemical stability from water, acid and base solution. The characterization showed decrease of mass from 0.07 up to 0.30% for an hour impregnation of material in water, acid and base solution.
