Summary: | Large-scale cable-stayed bridges are flexible structures. Flexible structures have vibration problem that can make the structures fail when dynamic loads are excitated to them. Because of that reason, technological developments produce smart structures that can adapt to dynamic loads. These smart structures apply a control system mechanism to the structures so that the dynamic characteristics and dynamic behaviour of the structures can be fixed and enhanced. In this study, the control system which is applied to the cable-stayed bridge is active tendon system that place an active actuator on the bridge’s cables. This study is conducted with a computer simulation using MATLAB® programming language.
This active tendon system produce control forces to reduce structural responses under various dynamic loads. To gain the amount of control forces, we have to calculate them using certain algorithms. The algorithms which are used in this study are Optimal Control Algorithm and Pole Placement Algorithm. And, there are 3 earthquake excitations as dynamic loads used in this study, which are El Centro, Northridge, and Kobe. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of the cables on cable-stayed bridge as active tendons that generate control forces and reduce overall structural responses. The other purpose of this study is to compare the performance and effectiveness between Optimal Control Algorithm and Pole Placement Algorithm. |
