Summary: | Coagulation / flocculation is a process of remove suspended substances which aims to remove turbidity in the form of suspended and colloidal material. Aluminum and PAC is a chemical that is often used as a coagulant. The use of alum as a coagulant and PAC raises concerns because of the resulting inorganic residues are carcinogenic. This problem prompts to make use of coagulant from natural material such as chitosan. Chitosan can be produced from shells of mussel and crab which are very abundant in Indonesia. One of the utilization of shells from mussel is to make chitosan as coagulant. This study focuses on the use of mussel’s shell chitosan are modified with Ca-bentonite addition as a coagulant. Effectiveness of coagulation was done by jartest. As a comparison , then do jartest with other coagulants are aluminum sulfate , PAC , and chitosan shell crab. Jartest performed with three variations of pH , namely pH 5, 7, and 9. Parameters observed in this study is the turbidity , organic matter , and iron . The optimum pH of Chitosan Ca-bentonite green mussels was at pH 7. Optimum dosage of chitosan green shells at pH 5, 7, and 9 is 500 mg/L. However , chitosan Ca-bentonite can not remove the turbidity. From jartest , it was found that the optimum pH of chitosan shell mussels and crab shell chitosan is pH 7 . Research found the optimum dosage of chitosan green mussel shells at pH 5 , 7 , and 9 are 550 , 500 , and 500 mg/l and chitosan shell crab at pH 5 , 7 , and 9 are 550 , 500 , and 500 mg/l . Chitosan green mussels with the addition of Ca - bentonite yet have potential as a coagulant, because they can not remove the turbidity. However, further research needs to be done to find effective bentonite composition to remove the turbidity that can be used as an alternative coagulant . |
