Description
Summary:Acid Mine Drainage treatment is necessary to prevent negative impact to the environment. There are two common methods used for AMD treatment, active and passive treatment. Active treatment is usually done by adding basic materials, such as limestone. The purpose of this research is to evaluate active AMD treatment in Lati Mine Operation own by Berau Coal, exclusively for WMP 5, 7, 12, and 18. The research is started with influent and effluent water characteristic determination and comparison with government regulation. And then, we evaluated AMD treatment process unit from observation data. The results showed that influent pH value is around 4, far below regulation threshold value, around 6-9. Effluent pH value is also unconvincing with fluctuated PH value, especially in night when effluent pH value could drop below 6. On the other hand, limestone usage as a neutralizer in Lati site was already exceeded theoretical lime requirement for AMD neutralization process. It was suggested that current dimension of existing settling pond was not following the standard design. To enhance treatment process performance, we needed to propose a new comprehended unit design, such as adding rapid mixing to current design. Rapid mixing unit is expected to homogenize limestone and to increase contact with AMD.
