Description
Summary:Water as one of the basic needs of every living creature must have good quality for its fulfilment. Groundwater is a common water source which generally has the characteristics its iron and manganese content are fairly high and should be treated before used. One of the treatment that can be used is aeration process by using multiple-tray aerator. In this study, simple multiple-tray aerator with charcoal as the media used to remove dissolved iron and manganese in water with the aeration process provides enough oxygen so that the dissolved iron and manganese can be oxidized and form precipitates is expected. This research conducted to determine the effectiveness of multiple-tray aerator with charcoal in terms of removing dissolved iron and dissolved within the test of media height variation, different initial concentrations, and the influence of changing pH value. Variation test conducted using artificial sample with iron concentration 3 mg/L and manganese 1 mg/L where the concentration determination based on existing condition of groundwater in Bandung. The variation of charcoal medium heights are 8cm, 11cm, and 14cm. Variations in the concentration of iron and manganese used are 1mg / L, 3mg / L, and 5 mg / L. While the variation of the pH values are 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. Results showed that the optimum height of the charcoal media used is 8cm with iron removal efficiency between 72-83% and 27-48% for manganese removal. Changes in the concentration of iron into 1mg / L and 5 mg / L has an efficiency of 53-62% and 80-85%, while the increase in the concentration of manganese into 3mg / L and 5mg / L has an efficiency of 14-22% and 14-19%. Besides, it was found that increasing the pH value makes the efficiency better. The removal efficiency for iron in groundwater is 82% and for manganese 30%.
