Summary: | Palm oil industry is Indonesia promising industry to contribute to poverty alleviation that also positively corresponds to the Sustainable Development Goals. The palm oil industry has come under fire in Europe over its impact on forest destruction and sustainability practices. The negative campaign coming from NGOs and environmental groups against palm oil because the increase of greenhouse gas emissions through deforestation and peat land cultivation, issue on human rights, and shrink habitat area for endangered animals. The negative campaign is a great concern for Indonesia as palm oil is one of the biggest industries for Indonesia. The threats for Indonesia are market access to European Union market, decrease in palm oil demand, employment for the people in rural area, and Indonesia economy.
The objective of this research is to identify current Ministry of Foreign Affairs Republic of Indonesia effort to resolve European negative campaign towards palm oil and proposing a 3D negotiation strategy as a recommendation for Ministry of Foreign Affairs Republic of Indonesia, the other objective is proposing a recommendation for a sustainable Indonesian palm oil industry. Research methodology for this study is a qualitative study, using primary data and secondary data as the methodology to collecting the data.
The role of the negotiator represented by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is to be involved in the activity involving international aspects, as the negotiator on the negotiation and the legal advisor for the agreement. Tactics, deal-design, and set up a negotiation are three crucial components of the most effective negotiation called 3D negotiation. Addressing the concern and the interest to the counterpart in order to make a common ground for both sides on the agreement so there would be a solution.
Based on this research, author conclude that several effort could be done with the involvement of all parties that related and make a powerful system in order to resolve the issue mentioned. Indonesia has to give its great effort in order to be sustainable, making a certification standard and making sure everyone is having the certification and understands their responsibility to their environment. Indonesia also should building a good communication strategy to sound about Indonesian palm oil industry.
