WOMEN IN PENITENTIARY (Study of Phenomenology of Female Inmates to the Role of Women's Penitentiary As a Mean of Women's Empowerment and Achievement of Gender Equality)

This research was conducted with the aim of understanding the meaning of the punishment of women in prisons and exploring principles and concepts in institutional efforts in penitentiary that are gender responsive. The study was conducted with a phenomenological method to describe the general meaning of a number of female inmates participants in their life experiences as an inmate while serving a sentence in a penitentiary. Case samples taken in this study were female inmates of narcotics abuse cases both users and dealers who were serving sentences at the Bandung Women's Penitentiary. This research was designed with a sequence of procedures in the form of: field observations, in-depth informal interviews, collection of documents that support research such as diverse art results, filtering important statements from participants, understanding the meaning and essence of experience, then describing the essence of participants' experience. The results of this study are, basically attention to how the lives of female inmates while serving a sentence are still very lacking. There are various meanings of punishment by female inmates, due to the diversity of backgrounds, situations and conditions experienced by female inmates. Policies, guidance systems, in the Women's Penitentiary are still not optimal in meeting the specific needs and characteristics of female inmates. In addition, the existing development policies and systems tend to regard female inmates as a uniform group of individuals and do not try to accommodate the needs, pay attention to specific characteristics and understanding of inmates more personally. This will result in inefficiencies and inaccurate fostering of female inmates.
