Description
Summary:Rapid development in urban areas leads to change in land use that was initially pervious surfaces become impervious surfaces. Impervious surfaces such as roads, parking lots, and rooftops lead to the increased volume of surface runoff. Unmitigated surface runoff from impervious surfaces can cause environmental problems in downgradient areas. Rain garden, as one of stormwater best management practices, is now becoming popular in several developed countries due to its ability to reduce surface runoff volume, hold surface runoff longer, and infiltrate more runoff into the soil. Rain garden is basically shaped like a small basin and filled with sand, soil and compost, as its filter media. This present research focuses on study of potential of rain garden to manage surface runoff in developed area, with Institut Technology Bandung (ITB) campus as the case study. A pilot-scale of rain garden with 3 m2 of surface area has been implemented in one of green open spaces behind the building of Gedung Lama Teknik Lingkungan. Based on 25 rainfall events during rain garden trials period, rain garden could achieve substansial hydrologic benefits through reducing runoff volume and delaying time of runoff. The runoff volume were reduced in the range of 73.25 to 100% and the runoff discharge was delayed in the range of 15 to 55 minutes.
