Previous researches showed that the similarity of cognitive mechanism, behavior, and nervous system involves in song learning process between birdsong and infant. Two of the important factors effecting song quality of singing bird are food supply and social interaction between tutor and learning bird during sensitive period. The purpose of this research is to study song learning ability of young male canary bird by live tutoring and tape tutoring with normal and extra-food fed. Observation was conducted between February and June 2011 on 12 ten-week old male canaries. Extra food consisted of additional food such as grain, vegetables, fruits, cricket, quail eggs, and squid cartilage. Quality and development of young canary song were measured using sonogram and oscillogram of song sample that was analyzed by Avisoft-Sonograph Pro. Fifty song samples were collected monthly for four months. Variables observed in this study are song duration, repertoire size, number of syllables of one song, syllable repertoire, and song repertoire. Song sample analysis showed that young canaries received extra-food and learned by live tutoring produce significantly better song (P<0.05) than others. Based on this research, it can be concluded that extra-food and social interaction highly improved vocal learning ability. text
