ENSURING AUTHENTICITY AND INTEGRITY OF ELECTRONIC DOCUMENT USING DIGITAL SIGNATURE BASED ON BLOCKCHAIN

Electronic documents can provide many benefits rather than paper documents, such as in terms of duplication that can be done easily. However, ensuring the authenticity and integrity will also be more difficult. Some people overcame that issue by using a digital signature based on Public Key Infra...

INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/36258 Electronic documents can provide many benefits rather than paper documents, such as in terms of duplication that can be done easily. However, ensuring the authenticity and integrity will also be more difficult. Some people overcame that issue by using a digital signature based on Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), but PKI is exposed to risks due to potential single point failures of Certificate Authorities (CAs). A number of news shows if there are several CAs that have been successfully compromised or even stopped functioning. When this happens, it can be ascertained that all components under it will be disrupted. In addition, other issues such as key management and expired digital certificates must also be considered when using PKI-based digital signatures. The purpose of this study is to create a digital signature system which can ensure an electronic document from threats that affect the authenticity and integrity of the document using alternative methods other than the PKI. In other words, this study proposes a new method for generating and verifying digital signatures without using PKI, but using blockchain, cryptography hash, and Two Factor Authentication (2FA). The use of blockchain as an alternative method is based on its properties such as immutable and resilient. By using a combination of several methods that have been mentioned, it is expected to reduce the problems that exist in digital signatures, so that it can be more optimal in ensuring the authenticity and integrity of electronic documents. Evaluation and experimental results confirm that the proposed method is able to mitigate the issues related with authenticity and integrity of electronic documents. text
