Description
Summary:Majority villagers of Japura Lor Village did not have a toilet, so then local governments encouraged to build latrines-bath-wash++ (public toilet) facility that is equipped with WWTP via “Special Allocation Fund Community-based Environmental Sanitation Program" and in accordance with national priorities in achieving the Indonesia Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The purpose of this study was to determine and compare the use and maintenance of public toilet performed by users with applicable regulations, evaluate the quality of the infrastructure-related programs and propose alternative recommendations for the use and maintenance of sustainable public toilet in the Japura Lor village. The sustainability level of public toilet is reviewed through field observations, water quality testing, influent and effluent Decentralised Wastewater Treatment Systems (DEWATS) and community questionnaires. Results of laboratory tests showed that the TSS, pH, BOD, oil and grease levels of the effluent respectively by 212 mg/L (exceeding standards), 7.58, 77.8 mg/L and 2.2 mg/L. The contents of raw water of Latrines++ had been tested and it exceeded the quality standard of turbidity, Iron, hardness, Manganese and Cadmium, respectively by 26.1 NTU, 1.96 mg/L, 529 mg/L, 3.09 mg/L and 0.013 mg/L. The majority respondents used the toilet more often than other means. The role of Field Facilitator Team are very important in overcoming ignorance public toilet users at Japura Lor village on the essence of use and maintenance set by the central government that supports the implementation in the field. User acceptance is a high sense not to public toilet overall, but the latrines facility and safe and comfortable sewerage.
