THE EFFECT OF Elaeidobius kamerunicus Faust (COLEOPTERA: CURCULIONIDAE) POPULATION ON THE PRODUCTION OF OIL PALM (Elaeis guineensis Jacq) FRUIT SET

Elaeidobius kamerunicus Faust (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is an efficient pollinating insects for oil palm, Elaeis guineensis Jacq (Arecales: Arecaceae). The study was conducted in PTPN VIII Sukamaju Sukabumi, West Java, for the purpose of calculating the beetle population in both male and female in...

The study was conducted in PTPN VIII Sukamaju Sukabumi, West Java, for the purpose of calculating the beetle population in both male and female inflorescence of palm oil and its influence on the percentage of fruit set. The number of beetles visiting female inflorescence are calculated using the counter at 09:30 to 12:30 with a span of 15 minutes, and sampling 3 spikelet respectively at the top, middle, bottom during the male inflorescence. Calculations fruit set is done after 6 months of the observation time population of E. kamerunicus in the inflorescence of male and female flowers. All data were analyzed using a computer program SPSS'16. E. Kamerunicus maximum population in the 3rd day of anthesis the male inflorescence, and at 10:00 to 11:45 in the female inflorescence with an average of beetles in June = 475 people / cluster; August = 294 individual / cluster (P =.00; shows the results of statistical analysis are not significantly different). E. kamerunicus population is affected by the number of spikelet male flowers are full anthesis (June: population = 23 025 individuals / ha, r = 0.881 and August: population = 12 175 individuals / ha, r = 0.883). The percentage of fruit set produced in December about 80% lower than in February, 87% because of the amount of pollen to the female flowers in August more. The total population of E. kamerunicus in female inflorescence was positively correlated with fruit set is formed (December: r = 0.807; February: r = 0.925). Based on the results obtained, we can conclude that the population of E. kamerunicus in male and female inflorescence affects the increase of the oil palm fruit set. text
