Analysis of the Effect of Coal Content on Combustion Based on Burner Flame and Steam Generator Efficiency

Steam generators at steam power plants are designed to burn a coal with certain parameters, including heating value and coal content. Steam power plants generally mix coal which has a high heating value with coal which has a low heating value to at least reach the design parameter of coal heating va...

INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/36421 Steam generators at steam power plants are designed to burn a coal with certain parameters, including heating value and coal content. Steam power plants generally mix coal which has a high heating value with coal which has a low heating value to at least reach the design parameter of coal heating value. Mixing these two types of coal with different heating values can cause the coal content of the burned coal is not in accordance with the coal content of the design. In this final project, the effect of mixing coal which has a high heating value with coal which has a low heating value on coal combustion in a steam generator will be analyzed. The analysis will be based on the burner flame from the result of coal combustion simulation and the steam generator efficiency, which are calculated using the indirect method from ASME PTC 4.1-1964. The final result of the analysis shows that the use of mixed coal as a fuel substitute for steam generator only by considering heating value parameter does not apply to cases in this final project. Burner flame from the result of combustion simulation of design coal has a maximum temperature of 1932 K, while burner flame from the result of combustion simulation of mixed coal which has the closest heating value to design coal has a maximum temperature of 2003 K. Steam generator efficiency using design coal as a fuel is 83,98%, while steam generator efficiency using mixed coal which has the closest heating value to design coal as a fuel is 82,75%. Mixing coal as a substitute for design coal needs to pay attention to parameters other than heating value. text
