Description
Summary:Domestic wastewater has a high organic and nutrient content. The nitrogen in it can lead to eutrophication in environment. One of the ways to remove the nitrogen compound is to use nitrification - denitrification process. The Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) is a biological wastewater treatment that can remove nitrogen content up to 90% by using nitrification - denitrification process. MBBR technology is a development of the Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) system. The purpose of this study was to determine the efficiency of elimination of nitrogen by using MBBR and determine the optimum conditions for the process in it. This is field research was conducted at the MBBR reactor consisting of 5 tanks and 1 clarifier. There is 3 main tank where processing occured that is at anoxic - aerobic – anoxic conditions, respectively. Has total working volume of 940 liters and using biochips as a carrier material for the attached microorganisms as much as 220 liters which is divided into processing tanks. 60 L to denitrification tank, 140 L to nitrification tank and 20 L to denitrification tank 2. Using synthesis wastewater with the characteristic of inlet of WWTP Bojongsoang wastewater . This system has the HRT for 4.7 hours, and the inlet flow of 3.3 L/min. This study do a couple variation of nitrogen inlet concentration of 5, 10 , 15 and 20 mg/L N. The results of this study obtained preliminary values for total nitrogen are 43,73;46,04;60,29 and 74,77%. The highest efficiency of nitrogen removals occurs in the variation of influent nitrogen concentration of 20 mg / L. Denitrification process takes place at pH 6.8 to 7.7, the temperature conditions in the range of 23 - 27oC and DO conditions 0.1 to 1 mg / L. Highest nitrogen removals occurs in the nitrification tank that has removal efficiency reached 49.9% at pH 7.4 to 7.8, the temperature conditions in the range of 23 - 27oC and conditions DO 4-8 mg / L. Nitrogen elimination process can be accelerated by the presence of anammox bacteria that can degrade ammonia into forms of nitrogen gas.
