Description
Summary:Vibration of jacket platform is related to fatigue failure which happens from relatively low cyclic stress that continuously occurs, such as wave load. This paper studies reduction of jacket platform vibration for the purpose of extending its service life. Tuned mass damper (TMD) is one of the vibration control devices commonly used on inland structures in a form of a mass attached to a primary structure by properly tuned spring and damper. Its utilisation is usually purposed to improve survivability of structure under extraordinary loadings, such as seismic load. However, to utilise this approach on an offshore structure is rather more challenging since the structure is continuously vibrated by the wave load. This study first analyses the influence of TMD parameters in reducing structural response to find the optimum TMD parameters. Utilisations of the TMD on numerical models of the jacket platforms are then carried out. It is found that the optimised TMD is effective in reducing the response of the platform 3 leg so that it may extend the service life of the structure.
