INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/36706 Crankcase is usually made of aluminum alloy and cast iron. The manufacturing process from the crankcase is very diverse according to the objectives to be achieved. A study was conducted to examine suitable material in accordance with crank working parameters. The research consisted of OES characterization, metallography, hardness testing, dendrite inter-arm distance calculation method and literature study to find out the manufacturing process and understand the parameters of material selection referring to the working parameters experienced by the crankcase itself. The OES characterization aims to determine the material from the crank body obtained and it is known that the research specimens are ANSI A-384.0. Metallography and hardness testing consist of the initial stages for material identification and further literature studies to answer the research objectives. Further literature studies are carried out to dig deeper into the reason for aluminum silicon alloys with the addition of copper and magnesium which are used as crankcase material. Metallographic results show that the phases formed are dendrites, eutectic silicon, proeutectic silicon and intermetallic phases namely AlFeSi and Al2Cu. Dendrites indicate that the manufacturing process is casting. Calculation with the DAS method shows that the distance between the dendrite arms is 11.56 ?m proving that the distance between the dendrite arms is in the range of 5-15 ?m for the die casting casting process. text
