Conventional ball milling method was used for nanoparticles synthesized with liquid nitrogen treatment under temperature of -210 up to -196 oC to wood bark powder and its characterization were done by using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) analysis. Nanoparticles produced from T90 screen type were used as an additive of PF resin with 2.5% weight of PF resin for LVL production made from Surian, Jabon and Gmelina woods at hot press of temperature 105 °C. The quality of LVL was evaluated by testing bonding strength, penetration of adhesive, formaldehyde emission and natural durability to termite attacks. The results showed that Jabon wood has a larger vessel diameter and longer vessel size than Surian and Gmelina woods. The number of vessels per mm2 of Jabon wood was relatively the same as Surian wood, but higher than Gmelina wood. The levels of extractive substance and ash content of wood bark were higher than that of wood of the same species. Gmelina wood and wood bark had higher levels of extractive and ash content than Jabon and Surian woods. The phenol content of Surian wood bark is higher (0.21%) compared to Jabon (0.09%) and Gmelina (0.08%). The contact-angle of Jabon wood (13,4o) was smaller than Surian (49,1o) and Gmelina (59,1o) woods. This indicated that the surface of Jabon wood more easily wetted by liquid or adhesive than Surian and Gmelina woods. The addition of nanofiller from Gmelina wood bark or Surian could accelerate the curing process and increased of thermal stability of the PF resin. LVL made from Surian wood had the best bonding quality, followed by Gmelina wood LVL, and Jabon wood LVL. The bonding strength of LVL using 60-80 mesh filler of Surian wood bark, Gmelina and Jabon and nanofiller of Surian wood bark were not v significantly different, and its value was higher than other LVLs. Compared to wheat flour filler, addition of PF resin with nanofiller from Surian wood bark produce the improvement of bonding quality of Jabon wood LVL which shown the increased of horizontal shear strength flat and edge values were 42% and 57% respectively, adhesive penetratian was increased about 72% and adhesive formaldehyde emission of Gmelina wood LVL was decreased about 83%. The highest value of natural durability against subterranean and dry wood termites was obtained from LVLs were produced using 60-80 mesh filler of Surian wood bark. After addition using 60-80 mesh filler of Surian wood bark, the resistance class of Jabon wood LVL against subterranean and dry wood termites were increased one level from class IV to III and III to II respectively. text
