THE DEVELOPMENT OF A SYNBIOTIC FEED (CHAETOCEROS SIMPLEX, SPIRULINA SP., AND BACILLUS MEGATERIUM) FOR THE ENHANCEMENT OF WHITELEG SHRIMP (LITOPENAEUS VANNAMEI) LARVICULTURE

One way to alleviate these issues is to utilize synbiotic feed: man-made feeds that incorporates probiotic and prebiotic components. This research aims to determine the best composition of synbiotic feed using prebiotics (Chaetoceros simplex and Spirulina sp.) and probiotics (Bacillus megaterium) to improve the performance of whiteleg shrimp larviculture. This experiment consisted of three main steps: (1) formulation, production, and testing of the synbiotic feed, (2) performance test of the synbiotic feed in post-larvae whiteleg shrimp, and (3) challenge test using 108 CFU/ml Vibrio sp. Three types of feed were used in this research: P1 synbiotic feed (10% Chaetoceros simplex + 108 CFU/kg B. megaterium), P2 synbiotic feed (5% Chaetoceros simplex + 5% Spirulina sp. + 108 CFU/kg B. megaterium), and commercial feed as the control. During the experiments, water quality was measured using physical and chemical parameters. The results showed that P2 synbiotic feed has a higher survival rate (77%), compared to the P1 synbiotic feed (65%) and the commercial feed (51%), which differed significantly (p<0.005). The average increase of whiteleg shrimp weight was also observed, with P2 synbiotic feed showing higher average weight 0.00228 ± 0.00029 g and higher average length 0.79 ± 0.068 cm (p<0.005). Based on the challenge test against Vibrio sp., the P2 synbiotic feed (75%) also possessed a survival rate that was significantly higher than P1 synbiotic feed (57%) and commercial feed (45%) (p<0.005). Thus, it can be concluded that P2 synbiotic feed has the potential to increase the performance of whiteleg shrimp larviculture. text
