Description
Summary:Inculturation as a process of integrating the Christian faith into local culture is an issue discussed after the Second Vatican Council. At present, a study of Catholic church architectural inculturation discusses matters related to reading physical elements of buildings, but no one has discussed the process of inculturation of universal Christian values into local architecture. This study examines Mangunwijaya's fiction and non-fiction writings, the writings of people who were involved in Mangunwijaya's work, and interviews with artisans and students who helped Mangunwijaya in architectural practice. Mangunwijaya's view as a priest, architect, and Javanese was the starting point for discussion about the process of inculturation in the local Catholic church in Central Java. Furthermore, Mangunwijaya's thoughts were traced to his manifestations in the design of church buildings through design drawing analysis, building photos, and field visits and observations of the use of space by the people. The manifestation of Catholic church architectural inculturation into Javanese culture includes four concepts, namely the openness and familiarity of the church, the humanist value of the church, the participation of the people who assemble, and the symbols of religious value and local values. Each of these concepts is manifested by Mangunwijaya in each of his churches, but with expressions that vary according to the context of the building. The openness and familiarity of the church manifests itself in an open and unobtrusive appearance, a horizontal building, the use of natural and neutral colors, and a lighting atmosphere like in the womb. The humanist value of the church manifests itself in spatial and circulation systems that pay attention to the psychological aspects of the people. The participation of the people who assemble is manifested in the arrangement of furniture that focuses on the altar. The symbols of religious values and local values are manifested in the placement of sacred images and statues, ornaments, texture patterns, utilization of existing buildings, and utilization of used materials.
