Description
Summary:Water is a main source substance required to support life. One of the water resources that most common and easily found is ground water. Groundwater often contains dissolved iron and manganese with high concentratiom that must be removed. This study uses a simple multiple tray aerator to remove dissolved total iron and manganese with the aeration process. As a result, hopefully the dissolved oxygen in the groundwater increases, so the iron and manganese can be oxidized to be precipitated. This Preliminary study which uses artificial sample aims to determine the optimum number of tray, the effectiveness of removing iron and manganese with variation of concentration, and influnces of pH in removal efficiency. The variations of the number of trays are 3,4 and 5 trays. Besides, the variations of the initial concentration of iron are 2mg/l, 5mg/l, and 7mg/l, while the initial concentration of manganese are 1mg/l, 3mg/l, and 5mg/l. The variation of pH value are 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. Moreover, the main study uses the shallow groundwater with iron concentration 4,35 mg/l and manganese concentration 2mg/l. In short, the optimum number of tray is 5 tray with iron removal efficiency 57-82% and manganese removal efficiency 73%-77%. Variation of iron concentration into 2 mg/l, 5 mg/l, and 7 mg/l has removal efficiency 57-82%, 83%-86% and 78%-88%. Whereas, the variation of manganese concentration into 1 mg/l, 3 mg/l, and 5 mg/l has removal efficiency 73-77%, 33%-45% and 19%-38%. The best removal efficiency of iron and manganese conducted in pH 9 with removal efficiency of iron 80-88% and manganese 56-67%. Meanwhile, the iron removal efficiency of groundwater is 70-72% and the manganese removal efficiency is 30-33%. Increasing iron removal efficiency into 8-9% and manganese into 12-20% conducted in the groundwter with pH adjusment process to 9.
