Description
Summary:For many years mineral oil has been used as liquid insulation and cooler in high voltage transformers. Mineral oil is obtained from petroleum that is non-renewable, non-biodegradable and flammable. Based on that facts, it is predicted that natural ester oil can replace the mineral oil. Natural ester oil is derived from renewable, biodegradable, non-toxic, non-flammable, and has a higher breakdown voltage, but has a high viscosity so that further processing is needed to reduce viscosity in the form of transesterification. This paper reports the procedure for making natural ester oil, then the characteristics matched according to ASTM D6871–03 and IEEE PC57.147 / D5-2017 standards. Electric arc aging is one of the factors that can cause a decrease in the quality of the transformer insulation. Therefore, it is very important to know the effects of accelerated electrical arc aging on chemical, dielectric, and physical properties in natural ester oil. An electric arc is produced using the needle electrode method at 16 kV, 20 kV, and 24 kV (AC) with duration of 0, 5, 10 and 15 minutes, respectively. The experiment results show that the longer aging duration and the higher voltage, characteristics show decreased performance.
