The requirements for completing the operational system include a proper wayfinding system whereupon its activities take place. To ensure that this wayfinding system runs well, there needs to be application of sign systems. As one of the best educational institution in Indonesia, some areas in Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) are deemed lacking in proper sign systems. During its development, ITB gradually divided its area into three zones representing three eras. These areas require sign systems that are able to combine the three styles. After doing research by studying literature, interviewing the ITB Directorate of Facility and Infrastructure, and surveying several areas inside the campus, the Oktagon, TVST, and GKU Timur buildings are determined to be the focus area on this pilot project. On these areas, the existing sign systems are currently outdated, non-uniform, or does not even exist at all. The designing process of the new sign systems are based on several theories, namely the theory of sign system including its types (orientational, directional, identificational, informational, regulatory, and ornamental); the elements of sign system including typography, pictograph, and color; and also theory of ergonomics to determine readibilty and legibility based on viewing distance and reading speed of the target audience. The main target for this design project is ITB student with the age range of 18-25 as one of the main inhabitants of the campus. This project has the keywords of modern, friendly, and semi-formal, which will be communicated through the choice of color, typography, and shape. The language used on the sign systems will be formal Bahasa Indonesia and English. Other than its main function to set the wayfinding system in motion, these sign systems are also designed to show off the identity of ITB. Therefore, the visual concept of the design are based on visual elements of ITB which include the identity color of cobalt blue, the drawing of Ganesha on ITB’s logo, And geometric shapes that mirror the imaginary axis symmetry and architectural nuance of buildings and environment in ITB. These visual elements are then stylized into modules in form of patterns and motifs, consistently used in every final products of this project. text |
