Description
Summary:The south coast of Java had experienced tsunamis that were associated with subduction zone. Kulon Progo region is in South of Java. That region is used to identify tsunamis event in the past as reference to predict tsunamis in the future. This study uses a hand core sample with TRK-02 code along 1 m at a depth 20- 120 cm The sample was taken in Kulon Progo, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta by Research Center for Technology LIPI. The purpose of this study is to determine the tsunamiites of Kulon Progo by grainsize, chemical element, and microfossil analysis. Kulon Progo had experienced tsunamis three times. The sediment founded at a depth 99 cm-102 cm, 90cm -95 cm, and 78 cm – 85 cm. The characteristic of paleotsunami deposits are very different from those above and below the deposit. Based on granulometri analysis, the paleotsunami deposits have medium silt – very coarse silt, poorly sorted-very poorly sorted, and bimodal-polymodal grainsize distribution curve. Based on XRF analysis, the paleotsunami deposit have Ca and Sr which been as marine characteristic more abundant than other layers. Based on microfossil analysis, the paleotsunami deposits have 9 species planktonic foraminifera and 5 species bentic foraminifera. Uvigerina peregrine and Cibicides bradyi show that the tsunamis occurred from bathyal-abyssal and mixed with outer neritic. Juvenil foraminifera indicate that tsunamis occurred when the foraminifera still alive and the rupture shells of foraminifera also indicate there were intensive clash because of the tsunamis.
