Description
Summary:The emergence of globalization era has initiated the infiltration of foreign investment into rural areas through various large scale export oriented industrial activities. This phenomenon arose in the development of Sei Mangkei Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in North Sumatera. Despite the fact that SEI Mangkei SEZ located in rural area characteristics, its global network industry activities transform that space to become a part of the urbanization process on a global scale. This study aims to investigate the characteristics of space and activities of rural industrial areas in Sei Mangkei SEZ through a planetary urbanization approach. Urbanization concept is relevant for analyzing the characteristics of space in Sei Mangkei SEZ since planetary urbanization perceives rural space to have a strategic role in the process of global urbanization functionally rather than a morphological approach that considers population and building density. This study uses a case study approach and mixed research methods. The results of this study indicate s that SEI Mangkei SEZ has become an extended urbanization space, namely a strategic space in a non-urban area to support the urbanization process on a global scale. Analysis carried out through institutional, spatial and social dimensions shows that the development of industrial facilities / infrastructure and the formation of industrial society in SEI Mangkei SEZ are mediated by policies and organizations with characteristics of global capitalist urbanization. This research is expected to be able to contribute in the empirical and theoretical explanation of contemporary urbanization in Indonesia which is explained through planetary urbanization.
