SPATIO-TEMPORAL ANALYSIS OF MANGROVE FOREST DEFORESTATION IN SOUTHEAST ASIA USING ENVIRONMENT AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC DATA PRODUCTS

In recent years, remote sensing applications have produced data products to map mangrove forest distribution and to monitor the deforestation rate globally. Meanwhile, various types of environment and socio-economic data products such as agriculture, rice fields, urban areas, population density, and...

Meanwhile, various types of environment and socio-economic data products such as agriculture, rice fields, urban areas, population density, and gross domestic prodction are also available on a global and multi-temporal scale. These data products provide space to be explored as an alternative approach in explaining mangrove deforestation causes regionally or even globally. This study aims to estimate and map the anthropogenic factors of mangrove forest deforestation in Southeast Asia in the span of 2000-2012 through analysis and synthesis of various environment and socio-economic data products. In the initial step, correlation analysis between each data product and mangrove forest deforestation was carried out. Meanwhile, each data product is also associated to dominant land use in deforested mangrove patches in 2012 data. Furthermore, all data products are integrated with certain formulations to estimate the anthropogenic factors of mangrove forest deforestation which are divided into three main classes i.e. agriculture , aquaculture, and infrastructure. The final step, the research product i.e. types of mangrove forest conversion in Southeast Asia during 2000-2012 was validated using high-resolution imagery and field surveys. The results of the analysis show that 22.64% of mangrove forest deforestation in Southeast Asia between 2000-2012 was caused by agriculture, 5.85% aquaculture, 0.69% infrastructure, and 16.35% was other human activities. Whereas 54.47% of total deforestation was not identified. In addition, the accuracy of research products is represented by overall accuracy that reaches 87%. text
