Analysis of Phenol, 2,4-Dinitrophenol, and 4- Aminophenol by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)

Study of the analysis of phenol, 2,4-dinitrophenol, 4-aminophenol was performed by using HPLC. The detector used in this HPLC analysis is UV detector, column used was a non polar column LiChrospher® RP-18EC, and the eluent used in this study was methanol : water (4: 1). Wavelength selection in the...

The detector used in this HPLC analysis is UV detector, column used was a non polar column LiChrospher® RP-18EC, and the eluent used in this study was methanol : water (4: 1). Wavelength selection in the analysis by HPLC is very important to give good results. In this research, the analysis was performed at wavelength of 273 nm, 355 nm, 406 nm. This selection is based on the wavelength of maximum absorption of phenol, 2,4-dinitrophenol, 4- aminophenol which obtained from the maximum absorption test using a UV spectrophotometer. In this study, the influence of wavelength selection on performance of the analysis was examined. From the research can be show that phenol provides high sensitivity at 273 nm and 406 nm, then the compound 2,4-dinitrophenol which provides high sensitivity at each wavelength and 4-aminophenol which gives a low sensitivity at each wavelength. The influence of other compounds in the mixture has an impact on the results of the analysis. From the research conducted, it was found that the compound 2,4-dinitrophenol has high sensitivity followed by phenol and 4-aminophenol which has a low sensitivity in the mixture. Determination of phenolic compounds, 2,4-dinitrophenol, and 4-aminophenol in the matrix of natural water have also been carried out but can not be separated properly. text
