Summary: | Ethyl tert-butyl ether (ETBE) is a commercial ether that can be used as octane booster and gasoline oxygenate. Synthesis of ETBE from ethanol and tert-butyl alcohol using strong acid catalyst, H2SO4, as standard for synthesis studies of ETBE from ethanol and tert-butyl alcohol by using solid acid catalyst, zeolite ZSM-5 was studied. ETBE has been successfully obtained by distillation method using strong acid catalyst, H2SO4, with its distillate temperature 52 °C and by solid acid calatyst, zeolite ZSM-5 with 45 °C - 60 °C as its temperature. Product was characterized by using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), 80.86% shown as peak area on chromatogram by its retention time 2.371 minutes, and 87, 59, 41 in mass fragmentation indicated as targeted compound, ETBE. Characterization using 1H-NMR referred to nine protons as singlet signal in 1.02 ppm, three protons as triplet signal in 0.98 ppm, and two protons as quartet signal in 3.24 ppm. Characterization using 13C-NMR referred four carbon signals which represent methyl group for tert- butyl in 27.38 ppm, methyl for ethyl group in 16.07 ppm, methylene for ethyl group in 72.24 ppm, and quarterner carbon in 56.52 ppm. ETBE from ethanol and tert-butyl alcohol by using solid acid catalyst, zeolite ZSM-5 also successfully obtained in various ethanol concentration with its result
5% - 6% based on measurement using GC-MS.
