Summary:Sunlight contains radiations of UVA (320–400 nm) and UVB (290–320 nm) which may cause the tanning and burning skins, damage the collagen and elasten fibers, and increase the risk of skin cancer. The means to protect skin from UV radiation exposure are the usage of photosynthetic pigments especially from microalgae Chlorella sp. as an active ingradient of sunscreen. The capacity of active ingradient of sunscreen is expressed by a value of SPF (sun protection factor). The purpose of the present study was to determine the SPF value photosynthetic pigments produced by microalgae Chlorella sp. The methodology included cultivation of the Chlorella sp. cells grown in a modified medium containing 5% GMTM and 5% NZTM fertilizers, extraction of the photosynthetic pigments from dried biomass in acetone (1:8 w/v), purification of the crude extract pigment using a silica column chromatography eluted by acetone:n-hexane (3:7 v/v), and determination of SPF value of crude extract pigment and purified pigments in ethanol in vitro. The results showed that the density of wet and dried biomass obtained from culture of Chlorella sp. cells for 10 d was 1.46±0.18 and 0.44±0.05 g/L, respectively. Purified photosynthetic pigments from Chlorella sp. were identified as ?-carotene, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and violaxanthin. The SPF value of crude extract pigment, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and violaxantin of Chlorella sp. was 6.08±0.15 (720 ppm); 5.55±0.07 (25,500 ppm); 6.85±0.15 (14,165 ppm), and 4.98±0.23 (1,440 ppm).
